In light of the FBI director’s having contradicted the White House chief of staff’s account of the events leading to the departure of Staff Secretary Rob Porter amid abuse accusations from two former spouses, the Washington Post asked an unnamed administration insider whether John Kelly, the chief of staff, could have been more honest and more transparent, that source reportedly replied, via text message:

‘In this White House, it’s simply not in our DNA. Truthful and transparent is great, but we don’t even have a coherent strategy to obfuscate.’

The source, identified by the Post as a White House official, reportedly labeled “a killer” the moment when FBI Director Christopher Wray, seated beside fellow leaders of the U.S. intelligence community before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, laid out the time line of the bureau’s investigation into Porter’s background.
