I heard Brene Brown the other day on a podcast and she left me thinking about the following – The risks we took early on in our business are what made us successful, yet we won’t take the same risks after the business has grown.  After hearing that I got to thinking about some of those risks. Figured you might like to hear about them too.

You could call me an accidental entrepreneur because while I always wanted to do my own thing, none of this was planned. Then again, I think that’s how many of us get our start. Yet, here I am co-founder and CEO of digital marketing agency BFO, a Great Game of Business All-Star and #1 Best Place to Work.

Now, I don’t mention these awards to boast. No, instead I mention them to establish that anyone can become an entrepreneur and build a successful business.

My path to becoming an entrepreneur implies you need only two traits to succeed – Brains and Humans. 

In 2006, my position as VP of IT vanished when my employer was acquired. Suddenly liberated, I found myself in a position to make new career choices. As I slowly watched the money drain from my bank account I began to realize what I wanted.

What I didn’t want was another IT job. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a geek at heart, I just figured out that I prefer talking to people over keyboards (most days).

Through my previous role, I had got a taste of digital marketing. Sure, it didn’t pay as much as IT at the time, but I liked it.

Being the genius I am (brains!), I decided to start an agency. Did I have agency experience? No, but I knew I had a passion for the work and I’d grown up in customer service. Again, being the genius I am, I believed my experience would translate.
